Creating a 2004 School Plan – A Manual
Taking Freedom’s Answer School-wide
Remember, this is a school-wide program. It is not intended for
just one group, or just one class. The larger the school, the tougher
it is to do it school-wide – but the bigger the payoff if
you do it.
The starting point is to build a Leadership Team that represents
every corner of your school – every grade level, every kind
of special interest, every ethnic grouping, etc. Then consider any
of the following ways to take it school-wide. (In every case you
will need the OK of your principal or adult leadership, but the
more of the school that seems to be behind it, the more likely it
will be to get the principal’s OK.)
Here are some ways to take it school-wide:
- A School-wide Assembly, where the program is presented and every
student is asked to take a Take
Ten pledge sheet.
- A two-or-three day hallway signup session, where Leadership
Team students sign up student volunteers and give them their Take
Ten forms at tables in the hallway or in the cafeteria or both.
- A systematic visit and presentation to every homeroom by Leadership
Team students, presenting the program and asking for everyone
to Take Ten.
- A special school-wide 9/11 Memorial Ceremony where all students
are asked to sign up to Take Ten.
- Friday Night Football (perhaps using your home football game
on Friday September 10 or September 17) to combine a 9/11 Memorial
Ceremony at half-time with recruitment of both students to sign-up
to Take Ten and adults to pledge to vote on the spot. (This would
be especially effective if the Take Ten forms were distributed
the next Monday in home rooms at school.)
- Whatever the format you choose to take Freedom’s Answer
school-wide, be sure to use your local school newspaper announce
it all, spread the word, and make sure every student knows how
to participate.
We recommend that you keep your principal and teachers/advisors
aware of all your plans, but should they not be enthusiastic don’t
be afraid to undertake the program on your own initiative, but always
politely toward all concerned. This is a student program, driven
by student passion. When the adults see your commitment, they’ll
come around.
