  • August 26, 2004: Even those too young to vote can urge others to do their duty
Here is a great Letter to the Editor written by Claire Lettow, State Chair for Alaska.
Voting isn't just a privilege given to us by the men who fought at the dawn of our nation to ensure our freedom. Voting is a civic duty. Every single person older than the age of 18 owes it to our nation, to the men and women who serve our country at home or overseas, to engage in the decisions that directly affect our nation.
I am involved in a nonprofit, nonpartisan, nationwide organization entirely run by high school students, most of whom are too young to vote but old enough to lead. This organization is called Freedom's Answer. Our sole purpose and goal is to break the voter turnout record in the presidential election.
Every Freedom's Answer student -- that's thousands of students -- collects at least 10 pledges from registered voters and asks nonregistered people to register. We call pledgers on election eve and remind them of their commitment.
As chair of Freedom's Answer Alaska, and as a 17-year-old student who cannot vote, I ask every one of you reading this newspaper to fulfill your duties as an American and go vote. I hope you voted in the primaries and will vote in the general elections. Exercise your right. Do it for your country. Do it for all of us who can't.
    ---- Claire Lettow, chair
    Alaska Freedom's Answer

  • June 14, 2004: Letter to the Editor
I just wanted to pass on a letter to the Editor, which appeared in The San Francisco Chronicle on June 12. Sarah Stoller, a California Advisory Council (C.A.C.) member, is the author of the letter. The title is "Politics teacher gives real life civics lesson."
    **********************************************
    Editor-
I am writing about the article "Politics Teacher Gives Real-Life Civics Lesson" in the Saturday, June 12th edition of The Chronicle. The article discussed the issue of there being little coordination to work against growing voter apathy. I am a high school student and I work with an organization called Freedoms Answer which attempts to combat this problem. Freedoms Answer was founded in 2001 and is a nation wide non-profit, nonpartisan voter turn out and registration campaign lead by high school students. The organization focuses on educating young people about the importance of civic involvement and provides resources and encouragement to make political interest a reality. Since 2001, Freedoms Answer students have signed up thousands of schools for an online program designed to engage students in getting voting pledges from adults who they know prior to an election. Freedoms Answer students speak and register voters at hundreds of conventions which focus on youth in politics annually. Furthermore, extensive work has been done by students in recent weeks to register high school seniors before their graduations. Freedoms Answer helped contribute to the national voter turn out record for a non presidential election year which was set in 2002. Freedoms Answer is supported by many local and national politicians and has major plans for the rest of the summer and next fall leading into the November election. The organization is taking the only lasting solution to voter apathy among young people, which is to get youth themselves involved in changing the world of politics.
I think that it would be inspiring for youth and adults alike to know that many young people care about politics and are taking active steps to make a difference. Please contact me if you are interested in learning more about the organization. Readers may also be interested in the organizations website at .
